.3 Million Available for Campus Suicide Prevention Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) today announced the availability of FY 2005 funds for grants to support institutions of higher education to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral health problems. The Campus Suicide Prevention Grants program is authorized under the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act.

It is expected that approximately .3 million will be available to fund approximately 20 grant awards to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral problems on college campuses. The awards will range up to $75,000 per year for up to three years, with an equivalent match from the application organization. The actual award amount may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The cooperative agreements will be administered by SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services.

WHO CAN APPLY: Eligibility is limited to institutions of higher education. Applicants from both public and private institutions may apply, including state universities, private four year colleges and universities (including those with religious affiliations), institutions serving minorities and community colleges.

HOW TO APPLY: Applications for No. SM-05-015 are available by calling SAMHSA's clearinghouse at 1-800-789-2647, or by downloading the application from www.grants.gov or from the SAMHSA web site at www.samhsa.gov. Click on "Grants". " Applicants are encouraged to apply on line through a new service at www.grants.gov.
