$5.5 Million Available for State-Sponsored Youth Suicide Prevention
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) today announced the availability of FY 2005 funds for cooperative agreements for state-sponsored youth suicide prevention and early intervention programs. This grant program is authorized under the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act.
It is expected that approximately $5.5 million will be available to fund up to 14 cooperative agreements to build on the foundation of prior suicide prevention efforts and support states and tribes in developing and implementing statewide or tribal youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategies. The average annual award amount is expected to be up to $400,000 per year for up to three years. The actual award amount may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The cooperative agreements will be administered by SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services.
WHO CAN APPLY: Eligibility is limited to states; public or private non-profit organizations; federally recognized Indian tribes, tribal organizations (as defined in the Indian Self-Determination and Educational Assistance Act), or urban Indian organizations (as defined in the Indian Health Care Improvement Act) that are actively involved in the development and continuation of a tribal youth suicide early intervention and prevention strategy. A minimum of one award will be made to an American Indian or Alaska Native tribe, tribal organization, or urban Indian organization.
