UIC Self-Determination Papers
The UIC National Research and Training Center on Psychiatric Disability announces the first-ever collection of papers on self-determination, self-direction, and psychiatric disabilities. These papers -- written by national, cross-disability experts on self-determination -- were presented at the NRTC-sponsored, "National Self-Determination and Psychiatric Disability Invitational Conference: We Make the Road by Traveling on It" (October 2-3, 2003). Papers address topics discussed in the three conference tracks: Individual Self-Determination and Recovery, Self-Determination in Mental Health and Other Service Systems, and Societal/Collective Self-Determination. They are available for download at http://www.psych.uic.edu/uicnrtc/sdconfpapers.htm. The Center is funded by NIDRR and CMHS.
This is Your Life! Creating Your Self-Directed Life Plan. Newly developed by the UIC National Research and Training Center on Psychiatric Disability, this easy-to-use workbook helps people with psychiatric disabilities think about, choose, plan for, and act on a life goal, with supports of their own choosing. The workbook has as its foundation both person-centered planning and the "stages of change" model. It guides people in mental health recovery to see that life change is a process, with natural twists and turns along the way. Download the workbook at: http://www.psych.uic.edu/uicnrtc/self-determination.htm#tools or contact the Center's resource coordinator at mhsrpweb@psych.uic.edu, for one free copy.
