NIMH Forthcoming Solicitation for Proposals for Its Outreach Partnership Program

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) will invite applicants to submit proposals for becoming an NIMH Outreach Partner from the following states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Charitable non-profit organizations with statewide outreach that focus on mental illness or substance abuse disorders are encouraged to apply.

The Solicitation will be available on the NIMH Outreach Partnership Program Web site on Monday, June 5, 2006 at http://www.nimh.nih.gov/outreach/partnership-program/outreach-partners.shtml. Interested parties can submit questions about the Solicitation from June 5 through June 19, 2006. Answers will be posted on July 10, 2006.

NIMH will be accepting proposals from June 5, 2006 through August 7, 2006. Applications must be received at NIMH by August 7, 2006. Outreach Partners will be selected by the end of 2006.

Each organization selected as an NIMH Outreach Partner will receive a $7,500 yearly stipend (dispersed in two equal payments of ,750 every 6 months). Partners are expected to leverage these funds to conduct statewide, science-based mental health outreach and education efforts aimed at specific groups and the media. Participation in the program assures that Outreach Partners are quickly aware of the most recent advances in mental illness and substance abuse research. They, in turn, help NIMH disseminate that information throughout their state. The Program is also designed to provide Outreach Partners with the opportunities to communicate to NIMH the public health needs of communities within their states. This feedback becomes an essential part of the planning process for developing the NIMH research agenda and provides insights that will help NIMH meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. The Program's other benefits include networking opportunities with o!
ther state and national organizations, participation in the annual meeting, and easy access to relevant NIMH publications for mass distribution.

The NIMH Outreach Partnership Program is a nationwide educational outreach initiative of NIMH, with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). The program enlists organizations in every state and in the District of Columbia to facilitate and increase the utilization of science-based information in their respective states
