CMHS NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL SUBCOMMITTEE ON CONSUMER/SURVIVOR ISSUES MEETS JUNE 23-24, 2003 IN WASHINGTON D.C.
The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues of the CMHS National Advisory Council (NAC) will hold its next meeting on Monday June 23 through Tuesday June 24, at the Melrose Hotel in Washington D.C. (see below for address). The meeting will take place in the William Penn Room and is open to the public. All those interested are encouraged to attend.
The agenda for the meeting includes the a dialogue with the CMHS Acting Director that highlights the activities of the Center since the previous meeting and reports on new and ongoing initiatives such as the New Freedom Initiative, including activities of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. The agenda also includes an extensive look at the role of faith-based and community organizations in mental health, consumer education efforts on the new HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) rules regarding medical privacy, discussion with Dan Fisher, M.D., (invited) member of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Administrator's Report. In addition, there will be time for public comment and discussion by members of the Subcommittee on recommendations for the full council. The draft agenda appears at the end of this alert.
The CMHS National Advisory Council Meeting will take place immediately following the Subcommittee meeting at the same site. The CMHS National Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for June 25 -26.

The Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues was formed in August 2000 to report to the CMHS National Advisory Council (NAC) on the specific needs, issues and concerns of consumers/survivors from the consumer/survivor perspective, and to advise and make recommendations to the NAC. (A complete list of the Subcommittee's recommendations to the NAC can be accessed at http://www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/cmhs/AdvisoryCouncil/matrix.asp.) The Subcommittee consists of members of the NAC and expert consultants.
