SAMHSA/CMHS REGION III CONSUMER/SURVIVOR MEETING JULY 14, 2003 IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

The Federal Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is sponsoring a one-day Region III Consumer/Survivor Meeting, Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Regional consumer/survivor meetings sponsored by CMHS are open to the public and give mental health consumers an opportunity to learn about CMHS' activities and report on the most pressing concerns for consumers in their states. CMHS leads federal efforts to improve the availability and accessibility of high quality care for people with or at-risk for mental illnesses and their families. CMHS is also dedicated to building consumer empowerment, addressing discrimination and stigma, and applying knowledge about best community-based practices. This regional meeting, the eighth in a series of regional consumer/survivor meetings across the country, is designed to identify the needs, issues, and concerns of people with mental illnesses and gather input and suggestions for CMHS activities.

Mental health consumer representatives from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia have been invited to give presentations on the most pressing needs of mental health consumers in their states and communities. Participants are asked to prioritize their concerns and to provide their views on how to improve publicly funded mental health systems. Attendees also engage in networking and share knowledge about innovative programs taking place in neighboring states. A meeting summary will be compiled and disseminated to the public and circulated among SAMHSA staff and relevant state and federal officials.
