CMHS NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL SUBCOMMITTEE ON CONSUMER/SURVIVOR ISSUES MEETS SEPTEMBER 2-3, 2003 IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND

The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues of the CMHS National Advisory Council (NAC) will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, September 2 through Wednesday, September 3 at the Doubletree Hotel in Rockville, Maryland. (see below for address). The meeting will take place in the Madison Room and is open to the public. All those interested are encouraged to attend.

The agenda for the meeting includes an introductory dialogue with newly appointed CMHS Director A. Kathryn Power, M.Ed., which highlights her preliminary thoughts and vision for the Center. The agenda also includes an extensive discussion of Goal 1, Americans Understand that Mental Health is Essential to Overall Health, and Goal 2, Mental Health Care is Consumer and Family Driven, of the final report of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. This will include reports on Georgia's Peer Specialist Certification Project, workforce issues and volunteerism, self-determination, and a report on an 8 pilot state demonstration of an anti-discrimination/anti-stigma public awareness campaign that targets the general public, businesses, and educators.

The meeting also focuses on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) priorities matrix featuring a report on the priority area of criminal justice and with a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of mental health courts by national experts. SAMHSA Administrator Charles Curie, M.A., A.C.S.W., has been invited to give the SAMHSA's Administrator's Report. In addition, there will be time for public comment and discussion by members of the Subcommittee on recommendations for the CMHS National Advisory Council. The CMHS National Advisory Council Meeting will take place immediately following the Subcommittee meeting at the same site. The CMHS National Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for September 4-5.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CMHS CONSUMER/SURVIVOR SUBCOMMITTEE

The Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues was formed in August 2000 to report to the CMHS National Advisory Council (NAC) on the specific needs, issues and concerns of mental health consumers/survivors from the consumer/survivor perspective, and to advise and make recommendations to the NAC. The Subcommittee consists of members of the NAC and expert consultants.
