SAMHSA Awards Almost $65 Million in FY 2007 Grants to Tribal Programs Promoting Mental Health, Preventing and Treating Substance Abuse, and Supporting Recovery
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will provide almost $65 million in multiyear grants, starting in fiscal year 2007, to tribal organizations serving the mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives. These awards are contingent on the availability of appropriated funds.
These newly awarded grants are in addition to more than $49 million in multiyear grants that were awarded to tribal service providers by SAMHSA during fiscal year 2006. Last year, SAMHSA initiated a new policy geared toward expanding tribal eligibility to more grant programs. Grants were awarded to 12 tribal service organizations across the country in fiscal year 2006. This fiscal year, 19 tribal service organizations received grants.
"The more than $110 million in grant commitments SAMHSA has made to tribal service providers highlight our belief that funding for these vital services should go whenever possible directly to those on the frontlines - those in the tribal communities who are addressing these issues," SAMHSA Deputy Administrator Eric Broderick said at the National Indian Health Board meeting in Portland, Oregon. "Through our Tribal Initiative, SAMHSA has succeeded in strengthening the resilience and recovery capabilities of American Indian and Alaska Native communities."
The grants support a wide range of culturally relevant programs for promoting better mental health, substance abuse prevention and treatment and recovery support. Information on the grantees and the programs that will be funded is available at: www.samhsa.gov/tribal/07grantees.aspx.
