SAMHSA/CMHS Seeks Military Veteran Consultant for Trauma Initiative

The National Center for Trauma-Informed Care (NCTIC) has been tasked to develop a situational analysis and marketing plan for a national trauma public education and awareness campaign. The marketing plan will serve as a roadmap for an effective and sustained campaign that will resonate with diverse audiences and affect meaningful change across the spectrum of health and human service delivery systems and in the lives of trauma survivors across the nation.

NCTIC is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS).

NCTIC is searching for a paid, part-time veteran consultant (preferably a veteran of the current conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq) to provide experiential war-related trauma expertise in the planning, development, and successful completion of the situational analysis and marketing plan. The veteran will work in close collaboration with SAMHSA/CMHS and Witness Justice, a member of the NCTIC management team that is directing this initiative.

Specifically, the veteran consultant will:

  • Provide input and feedback (including materials review) throughout all phases of the situational analysis and marketing plan;
  • Assist with the selection of a steering committee;
  • Coordinate all three (3) steering committee conference calls (planning, facilitating discussion, and completing a summary or minutes for each call);
  • Work with Witness Justice in a collaborative manner, with ongoing two-way consultation between the two subcontractors occurring throughout the situational analysis and marketing phases of the contract. The consultation includes contributing to the development of the products, and providing ongoing review and comment on all aspects of the project; and
  • Attend monthly in-person meetings (if local to the Washington, DC area) and participate in regular calls with Witness Justice.

Required Experience and Expertise

  • Experiential knowledge of war-related trauma, preferably as it relates to veterans of the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Understanding the veteran perspective and veteran outreach strategies/tactics
  • Familiarity with veteran networks and communications with regard to veteran issues (also how culture and diversity may impact outreach)
  • Have existing contacts and relationships with the target audience
  • Well-organized and able to meet tight deadlines
  • Able to work as a team in a virtual environment
