NOVEMBER 6TH TELECONFERENCE TO ADDRESS CAMPUS-BASED STIGMA & DISCRIMINATION
(There's still time to sign up for this event by e-mailing: adstemp@mhasp.org. Materials and call-in instructions will follow.)
On Thursday, November 6, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma (ADS Center) will host a free teleconference to address the issues college students face and ways that students can combat stigma on campus. Our speakers include Ross Szabo of the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign; Alison Malmon of OpenMinds, an anti-stigma campaign that began out of the University of Pennsylvania; and Dave Caitlin Stork and David Canose of Harvard University's Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy Group.
College-age adults are especially vulnerable to mental illness, in part because many psychiatric disorders---particularly those, such as schizophrenia, with psychotic symptoms---first emerge in the late teens or early 20s. Providing a supportive network for students with mental health issues counters the stigma they feel and encourages inclusion.
The ADS Center is a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services, and operated by a contract with The Gallup Organization and the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
