Gilberto Romero Appointed to Center for Mental Health
Services
Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues
Gilberto Romero, recipient of the New Mexico Governor's
Achievement in Aging Award, was recently appointed to
serve as an expert consultant on the Center for Mental
Health Services National Advisory Council Subcommittee
on Consumer/Survivor Issues. CMHS is part of the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Mr. Romero currently hosts a radio program in New Mexico
on mental health awareness. He has a wide range of expertise
in mental health policy, criminal justice issues, cultural
diversity and discrimination and stigma. Mr. Romero
has also served on a number of councils, committees
and commissions including the Governor's Mental Health
Planning Council, the Consumer Council for the National
Alliance on Mental Illness and the New Mexico Social
Worker Board of Examiners.
The CMHS Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues was established in May 1999 to provide suggestions to the CMHS Advisory Council from the consumer's perspective. The recommendations generated by the Subcommittee have addressed issues of stigma and discrimination, trauma, employment and recovery.
Mr. Romero will serve a four-year term. Current subcommittee members which include some members of the CMHS Advisory Council are: James McNulty, Pascoag, Rhode Island; Ellen Awai, Honolulu, Hawaii; and Randall Bosin, Chevy Chase, Maryland; Anna Patty Duke Pearce, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Frances Priester, Albany, New York; Carlette Randall, Broomfield, Colorado; D.J. Ida, Ph.D., Denver, Colorado; J. Rock Johnson, J.D., Lincoln, Nebraska; Pat Risser, Ashland, Ohio; and Paula Stocksdale, Paris, Tennessee.
The next Subcommittee meeting, which is open to the public, will take place on February 25-26, 2008.
