DESCRIPTION AND OTHER CRITICAL ISSUES:

During August and September of 2004, a series of hurricanes and tropical storms bombarded islands in the Caribbean and the U.S. eastern seaboard and Gulf coast. These storms (including Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne) have resulted in Federal disaster declarations in 13 States and Puerto Rico.

SAMHSA INVOLVEMENT:

SAMHSA continues to provide consultation and technical assistance to States impacted by the recent hurricanes and related weather activity. SAMHSA has received several applications for the Crisis Counseling Program grants operated by SAMHSA and FEMA. Eight States (Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia) and Puerto Rico received Immediate Services Program grants immediately after the hurricanes.
