Milliman Inc. released its Milliman Medical Index, an annual survey on the cost of health care, finding that total health care costs for an average family of four rose $1,303 over last year, an increase of 7.8 percent. The index also found that families’ costs for inpatient hospital care rose 2.1 percent, while their costs for outpatient care rose 1.6 percent. In addition, Milliman projects that the health care reform law will have no material impact on large-group health benefits in 2010.
From the abstract:
The Milliman Medical Index reports the total annual medical spending for a typical U.S. family of four covered by an employer-sponsored preferred provider organization health plan. For 2010, the total medical costs for both employees and the employers that sponsor their health plans continued to increase, with the average family of four paying 7.8% more for healthcare. This year’s report also addresses several elements of the new healthcare reform legislation that are likely to affect the annual rate of health cost increases in the future.
