On February 2, the U.S. Senate considered two amendments to U.S. Federal Aviation AdministrationS. 223) that would affect the
national health care reform law. The
Senate approved Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s
(D-MI) amendment (S. Amdt. 9) that
would repeal health reform’s requirement that businesses provide the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with
documentation of goods purchases totaling over $600. To offset the revenue reduction, the
amendment requires $44 billion in spending reductions from appropriated but
unspent funds. The Senate rejected a
similar amendment (S. Amdt. 28) that
would have repealed the reporting requirement but paid for it through new taxes
on oil companies. Additionally, the Senate rejected Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) amendment (S. Amdt. 13) that would repeal the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and all health care
related provisions in the Health Care
and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.
The FAA reauthorization bill is still under consideration in the Senate.
