Decade of Decline: A Survey of Employer Health Insurance Coverage in New York State

Categories: |

Topics: Employer-Sponsored Coverage | State Data

The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHF) released a survey, finding that 58 percent of state residents have health coverage through an employer-sponsored plan.  Down from 69 percent in 2001, employer-sponsored coverage in New York is now below the national average of 65 percent.  Despite lower enrollment, the survey found that 70 percent of New York employers offer health coverage, exceeding the national average.

From the report:

Employer-sponsored health insurance is the main pillar of the United States’ health coverage system. Nearly two of every three Americans under the age of 65, including active workers, early retirees, and their dependents, rely on employersponsored coverage. Over the past 30 years, however, employer-based insurance has slowly and continually eroded. Increases in health insurance premiums have outpaced wage and national income growth, making health insurance less affordable with the passage of time.
