This article studies two regions in New Mexico assessing the effects of Medicaid managed care for mental health services in rural settings. The article concludes that Medicaid managed care has a number of undesirable consequences in rural settings and may result in the deterioration of the mental health safety net if problems with existing services and funding are not addressed.
