Organization and Financing of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Programs for American Indians and Alaska Natives

This article, published in American Journal of Public Health, assesses the use and financing of substance abuse programs among Native Americans.  Findings reveal that, of those receiving substance abuse treatment, roughly 50 percent receive services from non-Indian Health Services (IHS) affiliated programs.  These results indicate that Medicaid may be instrumental in expanding access and highlight the extent to which Native American substance abuse expenditures are spread beyond IHS.
