This analysis of substance abuse expenditure trends from 1987 to 1997 finds that public payers share of substance abuse spending increased significantly; however, the authors note that substance abuse expenditure growth has been controlled relative to overall healthcare spending. The authors also highlight the shift away from hospital-based substance abuse treatment over the study period.
