On
March 14, Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) introduced legislation to strengthen
penalties for individuals operating pain clinics that provide controlled
substances for abuse. The bill would
double the financial penalties and prison term for operating such clinics,
known as “pill mills,” and provide support for state-based prescription drug
monitoring programs (PDMPs). In
addition, the bill would use funds confiscated from illegal prescription drug operations
to finance substance abuse treatment.
The bill is now before the U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime,
Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
