These authors conclude that copayments may be an obstacle to substance abuse treatment recovery because they may decrease average length-of-stay in substance abuse treatment in favor of a greater number of treatment episodes. Higher copayments were associated with lower per-episode costs but also with increased treatment reoccurrence.
