This article examines behavioral health spending from 1991 to 2001. The article provides detailed expenditure breakdowns and trend analyses for the decade in question and highlights the increased role of Medicaid in mental health care as a result of rising prescription drug expenditures. In 2001, behavioral health expenditures totaled $104 billion.
