On August 10, the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) released an updated version of its Medicare Spending and Financing Fact Sheet. The brief examines explains how Medicare is financed and examines spending by type of services. The updated version incorporates the impact of the national health care reform law on spending growth and a new estimate of the program’s sustainability based on the 2010 Annual Report of the Boards of Trustees of the Federal Hospital Insurance and Federal Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Funds.
From the report:
Medicare, the federal health insurance program for 47 million elderly and disabled Americans, helps to pay for hospital and physician visits, prescription drugs, and other acute and postacute services. In 2010, spending on Medicare accounts for 12% of the federal budget.
