Person-Centered Care and Planning

Neal Adams M.D. MPH, Diane Grieder M.Ed

Abstract

What is person-centered care? Person-centered care is about understanding the strengths and abilities, as well as the needs and challenges, of each individual and understanding that individual’s personal recovery vision—and then helping him or her to get the services and supports needed to make those hopes and dreams a reality. In contrast, traditional care has tended to focus more on symptoms and “deficits” and not on the whole person and the quality of their life.
