photo of cover of the Center for Mental Health Services publication, Clinical Preventive Services in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Update: From Science to ServicesSAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services recently published Clinical Preventive Services in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Update: From Science to Services. The 178-page resource summarizes the most promising preventive interventions in the behavioral health field. This review focuses on interventions that are primarily delivered by health care systems; therefore, interventions provided in schools, worksites, communities, and criminal justice systems were excluded from this resource.

The publication includes 16 chapters. The introduction contains information on models of preventive services, the differences between clinical and community services, and the health care delivery system provision of preventive behavioral services. Other chapters provide information on preventive services for pregnant women, including high-risk pregnant women, and information on screening children and adolescents (age 5 to 18) for evidence of a behavioral disorder. The publication also discusses tobacco, alcohol, illicit drug use, and depression.

This publication can be ordered through SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center at P.O. Box 42490, Washington, DC 20015. Telephone: 1 (800) 789-2647 or 1 (866) 889-2647 (TTY). Online, the publication can be accessed at www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/
