The Center for Mental Health
Services (CMHS) in conjunction with the National Mental Health Awareness
Campaign and the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, convened two
roundtables to examine stigma and discrimination issues for older adults with
mental illnesses. Each meeting
brought together approximately 20 participants, a consortium of mental health
care experts, consumers, and advocates.
The first meeting was held in
Washington,
DC
on November 13 and 14, 2003. The
second meeting was held in
Los Angeles,
California
on January 29 and 30, 2004. From these meetings, a services of recommendations and strategies were developed to address these issues. These recommendations can be found in Mentally Healthy Aging: A Report on Overcoming Stigma for Older Americans.
