SAMHSA Executive Exchange ProgramSAMHSA Email Communication All SAMHSA Employees – I am happy to announce the first SAMHSA Executive Exchange assignments. Effective July 19, 2010 Kathryn Power will be assigned for 6 months as Director, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and Fran Harding will serve concurrently as the Director, Center for Mental Health Services. They will have full authority and responsibility of their new positions. These concurrent details will also provide Fran and Kathryn the opportunity to both gain and share knowledge with staff members that they otherwise do not work with directly. And in so doing they will gain experience with mental health treatment and policy issues and substance abuse prevention and policy issues respectively that will make both of them better leaders and collaborators. Fran will continue in her lead role for the Prevention Initiative as will Kathryn for Military Families and Homelessness. This opportunity provides a mechanism for them to gain hands on understanding of different program and policy aspects of all three of these initiatives and will make the collaboration of the Centers on them all the more robust. I wish to thank each of them for their willingness to embark on this venture. The need for continued professional growth spans ones entire career and these senior executives are to be commended for their leadership in this regard. I have learned so much from all of you in the 6 months that I have been at SAMHSA and I am certain that this experience will be equally enlightening and helpful for Fran and Kathryn and the staffs of CSAP and CMHS. If my experience is any indication, the time will pass very quickly and be tremendously enriching. This action will also be an opportunity for CMHS and CSAP staff to experience new leadership styles. I know they both will have a learning curve as they adapt to their new roles but I am very confident that they will not only perform well but help each Center broaden its perspective and ultimately help SAMHSA carry out its mission in a more collaborative way. They have my full confidence and trust as they assume their new duties. I know the 6 months will pass quickly. When they return to their respective centers in mid January, I am very confident that they, CSAP, CMHS and SAMHSA will be better for it. Lest you be concerned let me assure you that no Center reorganization will occur because of this Executive Exchange Program. Please join me in thanking Fran and Kathryn for openly accepting this challenge.
