Marijuana/Hashish
- Primary marijuana abuse accounted for 13 percent of TEDS admissions in 1996 (Table
3.2).
- Marijuana admissions were generally male, white, and young (Table 3.1).
Three-quarters were male, 60 percent were white, and 45 percent were under 20 years
old. Marijuana was the most common primary substance problem among admissions
under 20 (Table 3.2).

- Marijuana use began at an early age among primary marijuana admissions--about half
had first used marijuana by the age of 14, and three-quarters by the age of 16 (Table
3.5).
- Half of marijuana treatment admissions were referred through the criminal justice
system (Table 3.7).
- Secondary use of alcohol was reported by 59 percent of admissions for primary
marijuana abuse (Table 3.8).
