2009-2010 NSDUH State Estimates of Substance Use and Mental Disorders

State estimates of substance use and mental disorders based on the combined 2009 and 2010 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUHs) are provided. The NSDUH is an annual survey of the civilian, noninstutionalized population of the United States aged 12 years or older. State and regional estimates are based on a small area estimation (SAE) methodology in which State-level NSDUH data are combined with county and census block group/tract-level data from the State.

NOTE: SAMHSA has released revised NSDUH estimates of mental illness among adults aged 18 or older. Revisions are due to improvements in methods for estimating mental illness. The improvements resulted in estimates of mental illness that are more accurate, particularly for young adults. As a result, State estimates of serious mental illness and any mental illness provided in the full report and detailed tables are revisions to previously released estimates. For more information on the revisions see http://www.samhsa.gov/data/2k13/NSDUH148/sr148-mental-illness-estimates.htm and http://www.samhsa.gov/data/2k12/NSDUHrevisedMImethods2012/NSDUHrevisedMImethods2012.pdf. Also see Section A.11.1 in the full report.

For information on other revisions to previously released estimates, see Sections 1.5 and A.11.3 in the full report.
