Chapter 4's Figure 1 shows the age distribution for admissions to publicly funded treatment programs using admissions data from the 1997 Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). The bar chart highlights the fact that the majority of admissions to public programs are younger than 55 years of age. Approximately 97 percent of admissions were younger than 55 in 1997, and less than 1 percent were 65 or older.
