Deployed Military Personnel and Their Families: Introduction

This installment of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Disaster Behavioral Health Information Series focuses on the behavioral health effects of being in the military. View the collection's annotated bibliography, which contains links to each resource, and helpful links, which provide links to organizations, agencies, and other resources that address the issues faced by deployed military personnel, their families, and people who provide them with behavioral health assistance.

Resources are organized into the following three categories:

  • For Military Personnel—Resources for military personnel to use in monitoring and protecting their own behavioral health while deployed overseas or when returning from a deployment
  • For Families of Deployed Military Personnel—Resources for the families of deployed military personnel to use in monitoring and protecting their own behavioral health while their loved ones are away
  • For Providers and Behavioral Health Professionals—Supplemental information and resources for trained behavioral health professionals to use when treating military personnel who are suffering from stress, posttraumatic stress disorder, or other behavioral health conditions due to participation in combat, extended deployment, or disaster response. These materials should serve as a supplement to formal training and should not be used without prior experience and knowledge of treating military personnel.
