$16.6 Million in Funds Awarded to Expand HIV and Substance Abuse Prevention Services in Minority Communities

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) awarded $16.6 million in funds to expand and strengthen the availability of primary health care and substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention services for African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native and Asian American/Pacific Islander communities.

The Minority Substance Abuse and HIV Prevention Program has three initiatives. The first initiative supports community-based organizations in their planning efforts to establish effective substance abuse and HIV prevention programs in minority communities. The second expands existing health and human service delivery systems to include both substance abuse and HIV prevention. The third initiative supports community-based faith and youth-serving organization efforts to integrate substance abuse and HIV prevention services into existing youth programs.

"The condition of HIV/AIDS in the African American and Hispanic communities is a severe and ongoing crisis," said Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Acting Administrator Joseph H. Autry III, M.D. "The Minority Substance Abuse and HIV Prevention program is designed to increase the availability of prevention and treatment services, support community-based outreach and expand the delivery of HIV prevention services in racial and ethnic minority communities."

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Director Ruth Sanchez-Way, Ph.D., said, "There is clearly a critical need for HIV disease prevention services that are culturally relevant, effective and involve strong institutions within minority communities."
