SAMHSA announces Availability of Online Directory of Physicians Credentialed to Prescribe Buprenorphine |

| The Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration today announced that persons seeking physicians
who can prescribe buprenorphine, a new prescription medication for addiction
to prescription pain relievers or heroin, can obtain information online
at buprenorphine.samhsa.gov
The online directory will be updated daily as physicians send their credentials to SAMHSA and are issued an identification number by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Physicians seeking information on how to receive training and become credentialed can call 1-866-287-2728. SAMHSA will hold a series of 14 education forums, "New Paths to Recovery", to apprize physicians and the public of the availability of buprenorphine to treat opiate abuse. Physicians who obtain credentials from SAMHSA can treat their patients using buprenorphine. SAMHSA is working with medical organizations including the American Society on Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the American Osteopathic Association to sponsor physician training on the use of buprenorphine in office-based settings to treat addiction to opiates. These trainings will take place in the same metropolitan areas. The first consumer education forum will be February 3 in Detroit at the Coleman A. Young municipal center. This will be followed by forums in the Wilmington, DE-Philadelphia region, Seattle, San Juan, PR, New Orleans, Baltimore, Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Salt=" " Lake City, Portland, Dallas and the New York-Newark metropolitan area.
