$5.2 Million Available for Adolescent and Family Substance Abuse Treatment Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announces the availability of FY 2006 funds for grants to provide services to adolescent substance abusers along with their families. SAMHSA expects grantees to utilize proven effective treatment protocols that include families as an integral part of the treatment process. These protocols include the Assertive Community Reinforcement Approach coupled with Assertive Continuing Care.

The Assertive Community Reinforcement Approach is composed of sessions with the adolescent and one or more caregivers individually and jointly. Therapists teach adolescents and family members how to find and use reinforcement for staying substance free. Assertive Continuing Care addresses the need for continuing care and the role of motivation in shaping behavior and the development of cognitive skills in order for the adolescent to remain free of substance use.

It is expected that up to $5.2 million will be available to fund up to 17 awards in FY 2006. Annual awards are expected to be $300,000 per year in total costs for up to three years. The actual award may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The grants will be awarded by SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
