SAMHSA Accepting Grant Applications for National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow-Up Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services, is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2008 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow-Up grants.  The purpose of this program is to promote systematic follow-up of suicidal persons who call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.  It is expected that $350,000 will be available to fund up to five grants of $70,000 per year for up to three years.

Every month, almost 44,000 calls are answered through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While not every caller is at acute risk for suicide, past SAMHSA-funded hotline evaluations have shown that large numbers of callers have significant histories of suicidal ideation and attempts. While SAMHSA evaluations have demonstrated that callers experienced a reduction in hopelessness and suicidal intent, the evaluation also showed that 43 percent of suicidal callers experienced some recurrence of suicidal ideation within the next several weeks.  This recurrence of suicidal thinking underscores the importance of receiving follow-up behavioral healthcare or other appropriate services or interventions.

WHO CAN APPLY:  Eligible applicants are members of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center network who provide 24-hour-a-day coverage and meet the additional eligibility requirements described in Section 3.2 of the announcement.

Applicants must be willing to participate in an evaluation that will be funded separately, and to work with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and Suicide Prevention evaluation staff who will provide technical assistance for this project. This evaluation will include examining the impact of a training session incorporating recent advances in motivational interviewing and safety planning.

HOW TO APPLY:  Application kits for RFA No. SM-08-016 may be requested by calling the SAMHSA Information Line at 1-877-SAMHSA7. You may also download the required documents from http://www.samhsa.gov/Grants/2008/sm_08_016.aspx

APPLICATION DUE DATE:  July 9, 2008

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Proposed budgets cannot exceed $70,000 in total costs (direct and indirect) in any year of the proposed project. Annual continuation awards will depend on the availability of funds, grantee progress in meeting project goals and objectives, timely submission of required data and reports, and compliance with all terms and conditions of award.

Applicants should be aware that funding for this program is not included in the FY 2009 President’s budget request, and funding beyond FY 2008 is not guaranteed. SAMHSA is allowing applicants to submit proposals for two additional budget years for planning purposes and for technical assistance in sustainability activities.
