SAMHSA Awards $30.9 Million to Community Treatment and Service Centers Helping Children Suffering from Traumatic Stress

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced that $30.9 million in total funding over the next three years will be provided through the Community Treatment and Services (CTS) Centers, which is one of the three types of centers under the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI). The overall goal of the initiative is to help communities meet the special needs of children at risk or suffering from traumatic stress.

The grants enable community treatment and service organizations to provide expanded evidence-based prevention, screening and treatment services for children who may be more susceptible to mental health problems because they have been exposed to natural disasters, abuse, neglect or other traumatic events.

Grantees are expected to implement and evaluate effective treatment and services in community settings and youth serving service systems, and collaborate with other Centers in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) on clinical issues, service approaches, policy, financing, and training issues. Grantees will collaborate extensively within the NCTSN for these purposes and for developing child traumatic stress-related products and services for nationwide consumption and benefit.

"This program builds resiliency in children by identifying and treating their mental health problems as early and comprehensively as possible," said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S., M.P.H. "This approach maximizes the impact  community treatment and service centers can have in improving the lives of children and their families recovering from traumatic experiences."

Twenty-six community programs from around the country have been selected to receive funding over the next three years. The actual award amounts may vary, depending on the availability of funds and the progress achieved by the awardees. The funds are awarded and administered by SAMHSAs Center for Mental Health Services.
