SAMHSA Awards $16.1 Million to Help Children Dealing with Traumatic Stress

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is awarding nine grants up to $16.1 million over the next three years to National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative Treatment and Services Adaptation (TSA) Centers.

This initiative is designed to tackle child trauma issues by creating a national network of grantees – the National Child Traumatic Stress Network – that works collaboratively to develop and promote effective community practices for children and adolescents exposed to a wide array of traumatic events.

One category of grants provided by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network program is TSA Center grants.  These centers are designed to provide national expertise and develop interventions for specific types of traumatic events, population groups and mental health service systems. They also support the adaptation of specialized treatment and service approaches for communities across the country.

“These grants will strengthen the nation’s capacity to provide help to children of all ages who experience traumatic events, such as interpersonal violence, natural disasters, or acts of terrorism,” said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S., M.P.H.  “The grants represent an important investment in helping children who have experienced trauma develop the resilience to lead productive and fulfilling lives.”

The annual award amount per grantee is up to $600,000 per year for up to three years.  Continuation awards will depend on the availability of funds, and grantee progress in meeting the goals and objectives of the project.
