In Brief…
Building Bridges
SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) recently published Building
Bridges: Mental Health Consumers and Members of Faith-Based and Community Organizations
in Dialogue. The 29-page booklet summarizes the findings and recommendations
of a CMHS-sponsored dialogue between mental health consumers and members of diverse
faith traditions and community organizations.
Two dozen invited participants attended the 2-day meeting, held in Baltimore in October
2002, to explore the roles of faith-based and community organizations in recovery for
people with mental disorders. The dialogue themes and findings presented address factors
that promote recovery, factors that hinder recovery, and system-level issues that impact
recovery. To improve relationships between consumers and faith-based organizations,
participants developed recommendations for CMHS, for faith-based organizations, and
for consumers and consumer advocates. The booklet also includes excerpts from President
George W. Bush's message on the faith-based and community organization initiative.
