As the concept of a trauma-informed approach has become a central focus in multiple service sectors, SAMHSA desires to promote a shared understanding of this concept. The working definitions, key principles, and guidelines presented in this document represent a beginning step toward reducing the ambiguity about the meaning of this concept. This document builds upon the extensive work of researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and people with lived experience in the field. A standard, unified working definition will serve to advance the understanding of trauma and a trauma-informed approach for multiple service sectors and multiple stakeholder groups and provide a foundation for SAMHSA's efforts around training and technical assistance and development of a measurement strategy for trauma.
