The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use is responsible to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services for managing and directing SAMHSA.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use:

  • Manages and directs SAMHSA
  • Provides leadership in the development of agency policies and programs
  • Works with HHS Office of the Secretary on matters related to program and other activities
  • Maintains liaison with congressional committees and behavioral health stakeholders
  • Analyzes legislative and policy related issue
