Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Toolkit

Overall Theme

Together in Strength, Dignity, Hope, and Purpose.

The following key messages and weekly themes provide a foundation for developing messages and posts that resonate with your specific audiences throughout the month. Feel free to use these messages as well as the sample social media shareables in the toolkit.

Week 1: September 1–5

Understanding Risk; Embracing Treatment, Hope, and Resilience

This week focuses on the importance of understanding suicide risk, promoting evidence-based treatment for all, and highlighting messages of hope, recovery, and resilience.

Key Messages:

  • Suicide is preventable. Combining knowledge, care, and compassion can make a real impact.
  • Suicide is complex and influenced by many interconnected factors. Knowing the warning signs of suicide saves lives.
  • Preventing suicide means understanding risk, accessing supportive, proven care, and sharing hope because healing is possible.
  • With the right support, people can heal, build resilience, and thrive after crisis.
  • Hope and resilience grow when people feel heard. This can guide people to find strength even in their darkest moments.
  • There is no “right” way to heal and recover; support should meet people where they are. Healing is personal. Every journey is different.

Week 2: September 8–12

Building Community Partnerships and Supports

This week focuses on building community partnerships and supports for effective suicide prevention.

Key Messages:

  • Elevating the role of local programs and peer-led efforts through evidence-based policies and data-driven community collaboration is a critical component of suicide prevention.
  • Embracing engagement of those with lived experience can help reduce stigma and foster a sense of unity around mental health and suicide. Moreover, those who have experienced a suicidal crisis or have lost a loved one to suicide bring important insights and perspectives to suicide prevention work.
  • Small-group conversations, with peers and professionals, that focus on post-traumatic growth can help create a sense of connectedness and belonging. Being connected with others is a key protective factor in preventing suicide.
  • Peer-led initiatives build trust and break stigma because people are more likely to open up to peers who have walked a similar path. This is especially meaningful to specific groups, such as veterans.
  • Locally tailored efforts address unique community needs. There’s no one-size-fits-all in suicide prevention. Community should always be at the table.

Week 3: September 15–19

Theme: Improving care and outcomes for people at risk for suicide

This week focuses on the importance of improving care and outcomes for people at risk for suicide through effective pathways to care and collaborative safety planning.

Key Messages:

  • Accessibility and visibility of resources is crucial so that those in need of support can easily find care.  A barrier to seeking help is often simply finding and having access to appropriate supports.  Establishing clear pathways to care encourages help-seeking and saves lives.
  • Working together on a safety plan gives people a sense of control and hope.
  • Suicide prevention isn’t about just one moment; it is about continued care over time. Ongoing support and follow-up care builds trust and supports long-term healing and recovery.
  • When someone is having suicidal thoughts, connection, thorough planning, and dedicated follow-up care create a vital structure of safety and support.
  • Everyone deserves access to treatments that work. Promoting evidence-based care is key to suicide prevention.
  • Continuity of care ensures ongoing support and long-term healing.
  • Prioritizing self-care is a vital way to support your mental well-being and reduce the risk of suicide. This includes simple, consistent actions like getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, engaging in regular physical activity, and finding healthy ways to manage stress, such as mindfulness, hobbies, or spending time in nature.

Week 4: September 22–30

Promoting Dignity Through Connection

This week focuses on the importance of uplifting the voices of those with lived experiences.

Key Messages:

  • When people feel respected, heard, and valued, they are more likely to seek help and stay connected.
  • People who have faced mental health struggles or suicidal thoughts bring valuable insight that can shape better support systems.
  • Real change starts with real voices. Empowering community members and peers to lead creates lasting impact in suicide prevention.
  • Real connection can help prevent a crisis. A simple check-in, conversation, shared story, or helpful resource can make someone feel less alone. Remember—sharing truly is caring.
  • Hearing from those with lived experience makes suicide prevention more hopeful, more human, and more healing.
