Office of Recovery
The Office of Recovery’s role was established to advance recovery from mental health and substance use conditions across the nation.
The Office focuses on SAMHSA’s Four Major Dimensions of Recovery
- Health - Overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) or symptoms and making informed, healthy choices that support physical and emotional well-being
- Home - Having a stable and safe place to live
- Purpose - Conducting meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income, and resources to participate in society
- Community - Having relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope
SAMHSA recognizes that people with lived experience are fundamental to improving mental health and substance use services and should be intentionally involved in the planning, delivery, administration, evaluation, and policy development of services and supports to improve our processes and outcomes.
SAMHSA is a recovery ready employer. We are committed to fostering a culture that is welcoming of employees in recovery, supporting and celebrating the journey they are on, and educating our workforce on substance use, mental illness, resilience, and recovery.
