Child Welfare

Chadwick Center for Children and Families, Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego. Trauma System Readiness Tool (PDF | 2.1 MB)
The TSRT is a self-report measure that was designed for child welfare systems to use as they assess the trauma-informed nature of their own system. The TSRT was designed to be administered to multiple informants across all levels of the organization, including caseworkers, supervisors, managers, and administrators. It can be completed across regions within a state or county. Results from the TSRT provide cross-informant data to each system detailing how front-line case workers’ responses from the survey are similar to or different from those of supervisors and administrators.

Drug Addiction

Virtual Opioid Addiction Treatment (OAT) ECHO Technical Assistance Initiative
The teleECHO clinic links expert specialist teams at an academic or medical “hub” with primary health care team members in local communities – the “spokes” of the model. Every teleECHO clinic includes a 30-minute talk followed by case discussions. Didactic topics include ACEs, opioid use disorder in special populations (adolescents, pregnancy), pain management, and addressing substance use disorder-related comorbidities.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

HRSA’s Strategy to Address Intimate Partner Violence (PDF | 391 KB)
In September 2017, HRSA launched a 3-year agency-wide strategy to address intimate partner violence through the provision of training, developing partnerships to raise awareness, increasing access to care, and addressing gaps in knowledge.

This technical assistance brief is intended to educate judges about steps to be taken to assist in the location and recovery efforts for children missing from care by ensuring the legal guardians, social workers, and child advocates within child-serving agencies are aware of and engage assistance from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on behalf of these endangered missing children.

National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health: A Systematic Review of Trauma-Focused Interventions for Domestic Violence Survivors (PDF | 712 KB)
This paper reviews the trauma-based treatments that have been designed or modified specifically for intimate partner violence survivors and provides cautions and recommendations for moving forward.

Early Childhood

Early Childhood Trauma Collaborative Innovation Network (COIN)
The HRSA-led Early Childhood Trauma Collaborative Innovation Network (COIN), a subgroup of HRSA’s Infant Mortality Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network, is composed of more than 50 individuals from 15 states, the District of Columbia, and 31 academic and local organizations to create infrastructures, systems, and supports in order to spread awareness and build resilience against early childhood trauma and toxic stress. Providing Trauma-Informed Care at Health Centers for HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men (PDF | 4.4 MB)
This HRSA issue brief offers health centers an introduction to providing trauma-informed care for HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). The overall aims are to help health center staff understand the disproportionate prevalence of trauma and stress-related disorders among HIV-positive MSM, recognize the relationship of trauma to overall health and decreased engagement in primary care among HIV-positive MSM, and apply promising practices in trauma-informed care to improve engagement of HIV-positive MSM in behavioral health and primary care.

ARTIC (Attitudes Related to Trauma Informed Care)
The ARTIC is one of the first psychometrically valid measures of trauma-informed care (TIC) to be published in peer-reviewed literature. The ARTIC is a measure of professional and paraprofessional attitudes favorable or unfavorable toward TIC.

Creating Trauma-Informed Care Environments: Organizational Self-Assessment for Trauma-Informed Care Practices in Youth Residential Settings (PDF | 293 KB)
This organizational assessment form can be used for organizations just beginning or already practicing principles of trauma-informed care. The assessment tracks the potential use of one or more sources of data and the extent to which it is occurring in the organization for the purpose of determining existing components of trauma-informed care that need further assessment, planning, data collection, and implementation while highlighting those components where progress has been made.

The primary website of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), NCTSN.org offers information on various aspects of child traumatic stress, including trauma types, treatments and practices, and trauma-informed care; the site also provides access to over 875 free resources (including training curricula, fact sheets, resource guides, and videos) to help child-serving professionals as well as parents and caregivers better support children who have experienced trauma.

This HRSA-supported initiative provides health care professionals and maternal and child health programs updated recommendations for pediatric health promotion, health supervision, and anticipatory guidance for well-child visits. The Bright Futures/American Academy of Pediatrics Periodicity Schedule presents the screenings, assessments, physical examinations, procedures, and timing of anticipatory guidance recommended for each age-based visit.

Family Trauma Assessment: Tip Sheet for Clinicians, NCTSN
This fact sheet provides information on how to get families to embrace the need for trauma assessment, the best practices in and appropriate domains for family trauma assessment, how to choose instruments and decide what to measure, and how to present results to the family.

HRSA’s Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)
Through community-based interdisciplinary training programs that partner with academic institutions, AHECs identify, motivate, recruit, train, and retain a diverse health care workforce committed to underserved and rural populations. Today, 49 AHEC programs with more than 260 centers operate in most states and the District of Columbia. Some regional AHECs sponsor provider trainings on trauma-informed care.
