Annual Releases are produced every year and condense data from N-SUMHSS into a set of reports.

N-SSATS and N-MHSS Merge Information

In 2021, N-SSATS and N-MHSS were merged into N-SUMHSS. Selecting a year from 2021 onward will only include N-SUMHSS data. You can still download the files from the earlier N-SSATS and N-MHSS surveys by choosing the desired collection and selecting a year before 2021.

2023 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS) Release

This report presents the 2023 data and findings from the National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS).

Reports in the Annual Release

Currently, the Annual Releases consist of four main products:

  1. Annual Report: These reports are produced every year on key findings from the N-SUMHSS
  2. Detailed Tables: These tables present in-depth findings on the location, characteristics, and utilization of substances and mental health services.
  3. State Profiles: Each state profile gives summary information on substance use disorder and mental health treatment facilities at the national and state level. This includes facility characteristics, services offered, client numbers, and a mapping of locations in the state.

1. Annual Report

The 2023 annual report summarizes the following:

  • Key operational characteristics of substance use and mental health treatment facilities
  • Use of pharmacotherapies
  • Language assistance services
  • Suicide prevention assistance services

In addition to these sections, the annual report provides an overview and background on the N-SUMHSS, highlights on the 2023 N-SUMHSS data collection, 2023 N-SUMHSS response rates, data tables corresponding to figures included in the report, and the methodology.

2. Detailed Tables

The Annual Detailed Tables have in-depth findings on the location, characteristics, and function of substance use disorder and mental health services. This information is collected by the N-SUMHSS. The data is intended for use by behavioral health services providers; researchers; and federal, state, and local governments. It gives information on the number and characteristics of public and private substance use disorder and mental health treatment facilities nationwide.

The 2023 N-SUMHSS annual report includes data on key operational characteristics and services provided by substance use and mental health treatment facilities in the United States.

The 2023 N-SUMHSS annual report includes data from 20,681 eligible substance use and mental health facilities across the 50 states, its territories, and the District of Columbia. These data include information from the following U.S. territories: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, the Republic of Palau, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2023, the Federated States of Micronesia did not have any eligible facilities.

The overall response rate among facilities eligible for the 2023 N-SUMHSS was 84.9%. Please refer to Appendix A of the 2023 N-SUMHSS annual report for individual state, territory, and the District of Columbia response rates. For more details on the N-SUMHSS response rate calculations, please refer to Appendix B of the 2023 N-SUMHSS annual report.
