NSDUH State Result Data Tables
The 2014-2015 NSDUH state data tables provide estimates for measures of substance use and mental health by age group across 16 tables. The estimates are based on a small area estimation (SAE) methodology, in which state-level NSDUH survey data of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged 12 or older are combined with multiple sources of local data. The age groups available are 12 or older, 12 to 17, 18 or older, 18 to 25, and 26 or older, as well as 12 to 20 for one alcohol measure.
The State-Level Prevalence Estimate Tables (PDF, Excel, CSV) provide a percentage estimate and 95% confidence interval for each measure by age group. The table on receiving mental health services was published separately (PDF, Excel, CSV).
The Estimated Totals By State provides the estimated total number of people in thousands and a 95% confidence interval for each measure by age group.
The 2014-2015 NSDUH State-Specific Tables provide the measures grouped by state, rather than by measure and age group.
Comparisons for NSDUH State Prevalence Estimates
Comparison tables allow users to determine if apparent differences across time and geography are statistically significant.
A report on recent changes compares 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 percentage estimates by age group, and also includes p-values. The change table on receiving mental health services was published separately.
A comparison of 2008-2009 and 2014-2015 NSDUH State Prevalence Estimates provides prevalence estimates for people ages 12 or older, 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older. There are also estimates for people ages 12 to 20 for two alcohol measures.
Tables of p-values for by-state or regional comparisons are available in a zipped file of CSV files and Excel formats. A Guide to P-Value Tables is also available.
Additionally, generalized correlation tables, both in a zipped file of CSV files and Excel formats, along with a Guide to Generalized Correlation Tables are available. These allow comparisons of other non-overlapping years prior to 2015.
NSDUH State Result Maps
The 2014-2015 NSDUH National Maps of Prevalence Estimates by State show the estimates with states sorted into five categories based on the value of the estimate and colored accordingly. Differences in color do not indicate that the estimates are significantly different. A report is also available with more information about the ranges of the categories (quintiles) used for the maps.
State Methodology Reports
The 2014-2015 NSDUH Guide to State Tables and Summary of Small Area Estimation Methodology Report is a guide on the development and presentation of 2017-2018 state estimates. A summary of the methodology is included as well as sample sizes, response rates, and total population estimates.
The 2014-2015 NSDUH Other Sources of State-Level Data report provides a brief description of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and compares state-level BRFSS and NSDUH prevalence estimates for alcohol and cigarette use among people aged 18 or older.
