NSDUH State Result Data Tables
The 2016-2017 NSDUH state data tables provide estimates for measures of substance use and mental health by age group across 31 tables. The estimates are based on a small area estimation (SAE) methodology, in which state-level NSDUH survey data of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged 12 or older are combined with multiple sources of local data. The age groups available are 12 or older, 12 to 17, 18 or older, 18 to 25, and 26 or older, as well as 12 to 20 for some alcohol measures.
The 2016-2017 NSDUH State-Specific Tables provide the measures grouped by state, rather than by measure and age group.
The State-Level Prevalence Estimate Tables provide a percentage estimate and 95% confidence interval for each measure by age group.
The Estimated Totals By State provides the estimated total number of people in thousands and a 95% confidence interval for each measure by age group.
Comparisons for NSDUH State Prevalence Estimates
Comparison tables allow users to determine if apparent differences across time and geography are statistically significant.
A report on recent changes compares 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 percentage estimates by age group, and also includes p-values.
A report on longer-term trends compares 2008-2009 and 2016-2017 percentage estimates by age group, and also includes p-values.
Tables allowing comparison between states, as well as regional comparisons, are available as P-Value Tables. A Methodology Guide is also available to help users interpret the tables.
NSDUH State Result Maps
The 2016-2017 NSDUH National Maps of Prevalence Estimates by State show the estimates with states sorted into five categories based on the value of the estimate and colored accordingly. Differences in color do not indicate that the estimates are significantly different. A report is also available with more information about the ranges of the categories (quintiles) used for the maps.
State Methodology Reports
The 2016-2017 NSDUH Guide to State Tables and Summary of Small Area Estimation Methodology Report is a guide on the development and presentation of 2016-2017 state estimates. A summary of the methodology is included as well as sample sizes, response rates, and total population estimates.
The 2016-2017 NSDUH Other Sources of State-Level Data report provides a brief description of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and compares state-level BRFSS and NSDUH prevalence estimates for alcohol and cigarette use among people aged 18 or older.
