How far back can I compare recent estimates for Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI)?

Due to changes in measures and methodology for mental illness, mental illness estimates from 2008 through 2019 should not be compared to prior years. Because of overall methodological changes, data from 2020 or 2021 should not be compared to prior years or each other.

Detailed information on changes specific to mental illness estimates can be found in section 3.4.7 of the 2019 Methodological Summary and Definitions document.

A full analysis of 2020 and 2021 comparability can be found in chapter 6 of the 2021 Methodological Summary and Definitions report.
