How were the pain reliever questions asked if a respondent indicated that they used multiple types of pain relievers?
If respondents use or misuse multiple types of pain relievers, all types are captured by the survey separately.
First, respondents are asked about their use—any use, not just misuse—of pain relievers in the past 12 months. Respondents can choose any pain reliever and can select multiple different types of pain relievers. This part of the survey is called the pain reliever screener. Any respondent who says that they used at least one kind of pain reliever is then asked more detailed questions about those pain relievers. This part is called the main pain reliever module.
In the main pain reliever module, the respondent is asked questions about the first of the pain relievers they chose in the pain reliever screener (e.g. Vicodin or Oxycontin). They are asked about the misuse of that specific pain reliever in the past 12 months, age at first misuse, misuse in the past 30 days, and the reasons for the last misuse and source for the pain reliever. The process is repeated for every individual pain reliever that the respondent chose in the screener. If a respondent selects four different types of pain relievers, the module will be repeated four times. For example, if a respondent selected both Vicodin and Oxycontin use in the screener, they would then be asked all of the specific questions in the pain reliever module for both drugs, once for Vicodin and once again for Oxycontin.
