What age variables are available for use?

In the public use file (PUF) and single-year NSDUH data in the Data Analysis System (DAS), no continuous age variables are available. The categorical variables for age in the PUF are CATAGE, CATAG2, CATAG3, CATAG6, and CATAG7. DAS also allows users to collapse categories using the “recode” function. Multi-year files in DAS have a number of additional age variables, which can be found under the “Background: Age” variable category.
