1. What data does the 2022 N-SUMHSS report include?

  • The 2022 N-SUMHSS annual report includes data on key operational characteristics and services provided by substance use and mental health treatment facilities in the United States.

2. Where does the data for the 2022 N-SUMHSS report come from?

  • The 2022 N-SUMHSS annual report includes data from 21,160 eligible substance use and mental health facilities across 50 states, its territories, and D.C. These data include information from the following U.S. territories: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Guam, Palau, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2022, the Federated States of Micronesia did not have any eligible facilities.

3. What were the eligibility criteria for facility data to be included in the 2022 N-SUMHSS report?

  • Data from all substance use and mental health treatment facilities were included in the 2022 report with the following exceptions: Department of Defense (DoD) military mental health treatment facilities; individual private practitioners or small group practices not licensed as a substance use and/or mental health clinic or center; jails or prisons; facilities that do not primarily provide specialty mental health treatment services; and halfway houses. 4. What was the response rate for 2022 N-SUMHSS?

  • The overall response rate among facilities eligible for the 2022 N-SUMHSS was 88.0%. Please refer to Appendix A of the 2022 N-SUMHSS Annual Report for individual state, territory, and D.C. response rates.

5. Can I compare the 2022 N-SUMHSS Annual Report and data to the 2021 N-SUMHSS Annual Report and data?

  • Yes, the 2022 N-SUMHSS Annual Report and data can be compared to the 2021 N-SUMHSS Annual Report and data.

6. How are facilities that provide both substance use and mental health treatment services represented in the report?

  • Facilities that provide both types of services are included in analyses specific to substance use (SU) and in analyses specific to mental health (MH). Some analyses also include a category for facilities that provide both types of services (SU/MH).
    These categories are not mutually exclusive since SU/MH facilities are also categorized as SU and MH facilities.

2022 Annual Detailed Tables

The 2022 Annual Detailed Tables present in-depth findings on location, characteristics, and utilization of substance use and mental health services as collected by the 2022 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS). The data presented are intended to provide behavioral health services providers; researchers; and federal, state, and local governments with information about the number and characteristics of public and private substance use and mental health treatment facilities nationwide.

2022 State Profiles

The 2022 State Profiles present findings from the annual National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS). Each state profile provides summary information on substance use and mental health treatment facilities’ characteristics, services offered, client numbers and a mapping of treatment facility locations within the state.
