NOTE: This table shows the boundaries used to create the maps (Figures 1a ‑ 1e to 41a ‑ 41d) shown in the 2023‑2024 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health: National Maps of Prevalence Estimates, by State document, available on the NSDUH Data Collection web page.
NOTE: The table numbers 1 to 41 listed in the “Table” column correspond to the tables found in the 2023‑2024 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health: Model‑Based Prevalence Estimates (50 States and the District of Columbia) document, available on the NSDUH Data Collection web page.
NOTE: State estimates (which are based on a survey‑weighted hierarchical Bayes small area estimation approach) fall into one of five quintiles according to their ranking. Because 51 states were ranked for each measure, the middle quintile was assigned to 11 states, and the remaining quintiles were assigned 10 states each. In some cases, a “quintile” could have more or fewer states than desired because two (or more) states had the same estimate (to two decimal places). When such ties occurred at the “boundary” between two quintiles, all of the states with the same estimate were conservatively assigned to the lower quintile (with the exception of the risk outcomes where the estimate was assigned to the higher group). Those states with the highest estimates for a given measure are in orange, with the exception of the perceptions of risk measures, for which the lowest perceptions of great risk are in orange. Those states with the lowest estimates are in dark blue, with the exception of the perceptions of risk measures, for which the highest perceptions of great risk are in dark blue. The upper and lower limits of each quintile shown in the legend collectively define a continuum and are not necessarily the actual values of a particular state.
NOTE: Because estimates were rounded to two decimal places, the upper and lower bounds of a quintile shown in the map legend can be identical.
1 The estimates in these rows are based on 2024 NSDUH data only. For details, see the 2023‑2024 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health: Guide to State Tables and Summary of Small Area Estimation Methodology on the NSDUH Data Collection web page.
2 Estimates for youths aged 12 to 17 are not available for past year heroin use because past year heroin use was extremely rare among youths aged 12 to 17 in the 2023 and 2024 NSDUHs. As a result, estimates for people aged 12 or older are also not produced.
